Monty – Entry VII

Lizzie shook her head. “Don’t say sorry. I like the way you talk about Mona–I don’t know much about you guys, but I can tell you care about her.”

“Well, yeah,” he agreed. “Even if we weren’t twins, she’s still my sister… My bossy, pain-in-the-ass sister. I love her.”

The human averted her russet eyes, focused on the fox sketch. “I don’t know what that’s like.”

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 6

Kaine was the first to break his attention from the odd slab of plastic. His caramel waves landed just above his shoulders, and his dark olive eyes grew large with excitement as she neared them. “Liz! Where’ve you been?”

His greeting broke the spell that similarly held their friend’s attention. The two exchanged a quick, one-handed embrace before she moved on to greet Gavin in the same fashion.

“Nowhere special–I just needed some space.”

“Space alone or space with Mr. Sexy Biker Friend?” the junior countered, one eyebrow cocked.

Lizzie’s jaw dropped. “H-He’s just a friend!”

The underclassmen swapped knowing gazes as they continued toward the parking lot, shrugging off her claim. “Yeah, okay. Whatever you say.”

Monty – Entry VI

“The brand on your shoulder–I’ve seen similar brands on the bodies of bandits belonging to two of the most dangerous clans in the region: the Peters and the Shaws,” he analyzed. “They’re the only families I know of who scar their children as a way to identify them. Yours is new to me.”

“That’s ’cause none of us have died yet,” she shrugged, meeting his piercing eyes. “My brothers and sisters and me are part of a new clan. Our daddy is Jeb Peters and our momma is Kitty Shaw.”

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 5

“Knowing him, he actually might be…” The human grumbled.

The prince offered her a contrite smile. “Still don’t like him?”

“Why would I?” Lizzie demanded. “Mona might have forgiven him, but I haven’t.”

Monty seemed to hesitate before responding; his expression had shifted from apologetic to stern as his emerald eyes became unfocused. It was only for a moment, but Lizzie could recall this same distracted demeanor from their short time spent as roommates.

Alexa must’ve reached out to him.

Monty – Entry III

“No, we won’t.” The Alagona twins shared a glance; Monty could see his sister was uneasy with his vow. “Is this okay?”

She retracted her hand from between the two and let out an exasperated sigh. “Fine–but you’re dealing with dad.”

He nodded, accepting her terms. As the only children their parents could bear, both teens had spent their lives under the weight of their father’s expectations. The children of angels were born human and, if they were the vessels for a spirit that had yet to return to Earth, they would have their true selves awakened by the sitting prince. This typically occurred at a young age for the Jovians, but there had yet to be a single prince to unlock the potential in Mona’s soul. In Matteo Alagona’s eyes, his daughter was a mistake–the only human in a family of angels.

Monty – Entry II

She could not have been more than ten. She was curled up at the base of an old worn-down fountain, clad in a filthy over-sized t-shirt. It was so torn along the bottom that he would have mistaken it for a rag. Men’s shorts swallowed her up from the waist down. Her feet were bare, dirty, and covered in scratches and cuts. The wounds seemed to travel up the child’s legs.

She’s been running.

The young human continued to watch the spirit, peering at him through a mess of umber locks. She shook fervently as a gust of fall passed through the heart of the park, forcing the child to hug herself more tightly. In her shifting, he noticed a large black spot through the rips in her top, an uneven splattering against her side.

His expression hardened at the sight. Damn humans… Who the hell would hurt a little kid?

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 1

I think I started noticing the colors when you started defying Daddy. Your color lightened so much you actually showed three different kinds; an orangey stripe like an apricot, a bright yellow ring, and further in was a line of cloudy dark red.

I don’t know what any of that means, though. Mona is the only one I told, and she said she’ll help me find a book from the library about it. You know I haven’t read a lot of books. What little I have read was in secret with you. You taught me how to read and write. You taught me how to count and do some math.

You were a better daddy to me than Daddy.

Monty – Entry I

Monty Alagona was seventeen years old. He was the only son to Matteo and Veronica. His only sibling was his identical twin sister, Mona. He had two older cousins and one younger, the latter of which was his favorite person after his best friend, Connor Montgomery. He was named for his grandfather, Montague Sr., who had passed away before he was born. He lived a normal, boring, predictable life.

As boring as a reincarnated angel on Earth could manage when they were a member of the third generation since the plague had wiped out the masses and devastated the planet.
