Scarlett Moon, Chapter 1

A hand appeared before her; she took it without hesitation, gripping their forearm as they did hers. A coughing fit overtook her, the sound of her own ailment easing her senses back. She used the inside of her shirt to wipe away her tears, clearing her vision just enough to allow her to study the one who came to her aid.

She let out another scream when she saw him. She tried to wrestle her arm from his grasp to no avail.

The hooded figure stood nearly a foot taller, and he grinned in a frightening manner as he held her in place with minimal effort.

“Finally found you,” he bragged. His breath was a mixture of tobacco and spearmint. His sage eyes held her in place.

She felt as if he could peer into her very soul.

Monty – Entry VI

"The brand on your shoulder--I've seen similar brands on the bodies of bandits belonging to two of the most dangerous clans in the region: the Peters and the Shaws," he analyzed. "They're the only families I know of who scar their children as a way to identify them. Yours is new to me."

"That's 'cause none of us have died yet," she shrugged, meeting his piercing eyes. "My brothers and sisters and me are part of a new clan. Our daddy is Jeb Peters and our momma is Kitty Shaw."

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 5

"Knowing him, he actually might be..." The human grumbled.

The prince offered her a contrite smile. "Still don't like him?"

"Why would I?" Lizzie demanded. "Mona might have forgiven him, but I haven't."

Monty seemed to hesitate before responding; his expression had shifted from apologetic to stern as his emerald eyes became unfocused. It was only for a moment, but Lizzie could recall this same distracted demeanor from their short time spent as roommates.

Alexa must've reached out to him.

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 4

She squinted in the waning sunlight, studying him. His hair was coal black and shaved short along the sides, the tip of his dark wavy crown spilling over onto his forehead, threatening to cover his thick onyx brows and gorgeous emerald eyes. They nearly distracted her from his aura--his bright greenish-yellow glow, speckled with light brown closer to his body and topped with a prominent outer layer of baby pink.

Monty – Entry IV

“Oh, Monty--” The pair looked back at Chris as Mona continued up the steps. “What do I tell Frankie? The council’s been looking for you, so he wanted me to bring you in.”

He felt Lizzie squeeze his hand tightly. He passed his thumb over the back of her hand. It was a small gesture, but he could tell it had eased her by how much more relaxed her grip had become.

“Tell them all I’ll be there first thing tomorrow. I’m busy.”

Lizzie’s Diary – Entry 3

Ever since Monty moved out, I've been attending the human school in the Savannah colony. Since it was my first time in that kind of environment, they placed me a couple of grades under my age requirement and assigned me a bunch of remedial classes to help me catch up. It took a year for me to learn enough to be dismissed from the "catch up classes," and another year before I was finally allowed to join my designated grade. I've met lots of humans around my age, and I even have a few friends.

I think it all started with Gavin Moore. We met when I was still enrolled in a lower grade, and he invited me to sit with his friends during lunch hour. Before that day, I had basically kept to myself; I only ever hung out with Mona and her angel friends, so interacting with other humans sounded so plain. Gavin and his friends were far from plain--they're all so funny and quirky. I had never met anyone who could make me laugh like that... Not since Monty and his friends.

Monty – Entry III

“No, we won’t.” The Alagona twins shared a glance; Monty could see his sister was uneasy with his vow. “Is this okay?”

She retracted her hand from between the two and let out an exasperated sigh. “Fine--but you’re dealing with dad.”

He nodded, accepting her terms. As the only children their parents could bear, both teens had spent their lives under the weight of their father’s expectations. The children of angels were born human and, if they were the vessels for a spirit that had yet to return to Earth, they would have their true selves awakened by the sitting prince. This typically occurred at a young age for the Jovians, but there had yet to be a single prince to unlock the potential in Mona’s soul. In Matteo Alagona’s eyes, his daughter was a mistake--the only human in a family of angels.

"How're my colors?" he muttered, a hint of a smile on his lips. When she stared at him wide-eyed, he stated, "Twin thing--Mona and I share everything. She told me about your aura vision."

Lizzie slid her hands into the pockets of the hoodie Mona had lent her, her russet eyes averted. She couldn't understand why she reacted in such a way. The human had never before felt self-conscious, but living with the Alagonas had brought a flurry of new emotions into her adolescent life. She despised it.

What's the big deal? she told herself. It's just Monty. I trust him with this.

Monty – Entry II

She could not have been more than ten. She was curled up at the base of an old worn-down fountain, clad in a filthy over-sized t-shirt. It was so torn along the bottom that he would have mistaken it for a rag. Men’s shorts swallowed her up from the waist down. Her feet were bare, dirty, and covered in scratches and cuts. The wounds seemed to travel up the child’s legs.

She’s been running.

The young human continued to watch the spirit, peering at him through a mess of umber locks. She shook fervently as a gust of fall passed through the heart of the park, forcing the child to hug herself more tightly. In her shifting, he noticed a large black spot through the rips in her top, an uneven splattering against her side.

His expression hardened at the sight. Damn humans… Who the hell would hurt a little kid?
