Happy Birthday, Kaine!

Here’s a character that hasn’t been featured much since the earlier chapters of the series, and I’m hoping to rectify that with this biography and Solar Winds. Meet Kaine Elliott, the tenacious alchemist.

Three facts about Kaine:

  1. Kaine was one of the first tenants of Savannah’s halfway house. With support from his friends, he was able to leave his abusive home.
  2. He’s bisexual and very fluid with his identity and fashion choices. He doesn’t like wearing too much makeup, though, as it makes his face itch.
  3. As outgoing and eclectic as his interests are, some may be surprised to find out that he’s a major bookworm. The walls of his bedroom are lined with shelves and bookcases; his favorite genre is fantasy.

My thoughts on Kaine:

Kaine grew up living with his abusive mother and her narrow-minded family. His father had run off when he was very young, leaving him to suffer in a neglectful household. His grandparents shut down every interest he had that strayed from traditional masculine values, but Kaine’s rebellious spirit encouraged him to pursue his interests in secret. His mother didn’t care one way or another, only really paying attention to him when she felt the need to act out her perverse fantasies.

Growing up in this environment led Kaine to resent any and all physical contact with individuals who hadn’t earned his trust, or at the very least gained his consent. Having been left alone a lot taught him to be very independent, causing him to loathe clinginess and obsessive personalities. To this day, it astounds him how Tawni was able to barge her way into his life and become one of his closest friends. He tells his associates that they’re both loud-mouthed, outspoken nerds, so it was only natural for them to stick together. In reality, he treasures how alert and attentive she can be; she’s mindful of his boundaries, owns up to her mistakes, and will openly tell people who get on his nerves to fuck off. That’s not to say that he can’t speak up for himself–he does, efficiently, and very often. Tawni just beats him to the punch.

His interests lie in books, manga, comics, anime, and fantasy flicks. Between him and Tawni, their household boasts a vast collection of entertainment. Though bisexual, he has a preference for men, and has been out and proudly dating by these preferences since he moved into the halfway house. He and Tyler tried dating briefly before settling on a healthy platonic relationship; the orphan is one of the only humans Kaine keeps in touch with now that the tribe has moved further south. This makes him one of the few people aware of Tyler’s secret relationship with Adeline, Karia’s youngest sister. He’s torn between his loyalty to Karia and his respect for his friend’s privacy, causing him to maintain some distance with the psychic at the start if Solar Winds. Karia knows that something is off with him, but also knows that he’ll tell her when he’s ready.

When he was first recruited, Kaine was mentored almost exclusively by Jason, and it wasn’t long before he developed a crush on the older man. Jason let him down gently, and the two remain friends, but Kaine can’t help but feel a little jealous watching Jason and Karia interact, even though he’s seen hints of the elder Carr brother’s depression and knows that the psychic has no romantic interest in him. This logic does little to soften the emotional blows while the Kaine deals with his own trauma and fear of abandonment.

Kaine’s ability is alchemy, specifically elemental and biological transmutation; in the simplest of terms, is the ability to transform objects, either fully or partially, into similar yet different objects. He can manipulate the chemical elements of a substance and rearrange its molecules in order to make it take the form and state of his preference. The easiest tasks involve him transmuting large metal pipes and rods into melee weapons and blades, but he’s also been known to alter states of matter as well as his own appearance. Kaine’s always changing the way he looks here or there, from his hair and eye color to transforming into a full-on animal. His usual beast forms include a giant eagle, a stallion, and a lion.

For those of you who don’t know, Kaine is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
