Three facts about Meleni:
- She takes her role as their community’s leading farmer seriously. Mel meets with other local farming families regularly and gives them tips on growing their crops.
- Ever the pacifist, she prefers defense to offense. However, she can have her plants go from barriers to weapons in a pinch.
- When she isn’t out in the field, she’s worriedly running after Teresa. Meleni tends to forget that her little sister is a resident badass.
My thoughts on Meleni:
The Pinho family live in a large farming community not two hundred kilometers from the coast. Meleni is the eldest of seven children and has upwards of fifteen cousins, last time she checked. Since Heloisa, Daiana, and Raul–the eldest three siblings after her–have already begun having children, Onyait has been hinting at his desire to start a family of their own. It doesn’t help that his mother Odete has been badgering them for grandchildren. It isn’t that Meleni doesn’t want any, but rather that she wants to wait. For what, she doesn’t know, as the Hermeans have all but sat out the mission for this generation.
Each fairy has their own special skill. For Rave, she can teleport; for Cienna, she can create hybrids of existing plant species, and is on the verge of creating a new species altogether. Meleni can summon plants to her, no matter how far from nature she is. This makes her a more versatile fighter, despite the fact she loathes violence. Meleni is more comfortable creating hedge mazes and summoning thorny vine barriers than she is using her plants to inflict harm. This makes Onyait and Teresa even more protective of her, even though she’s the eldest of the three. Her gentle nature also makes her a great negotiator, leading to several peaceful deals and pacts with local colonies and human tribes.
For those of you who don’t know, Meleni is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
