It’s February 13th. Saturday. Sun’s out, birds are chirping, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow… But screw that, ’cause Michael Flynn’s birthday is today!
Important note: I’m referring to an original character of mine with a minor role in the Saturn Rising trilogy. I am NOT referring to the former National Security Advisor of the United States. I literally came up with forenames before researching random common surnames in the U.S. and I just threw them together based on how they sounded. I also created this character with this name YEARS ago, back when I had little to no interest in politics and had no clue who Michael Flynn was.
I refuse to change the name because I think this coincidence is honestly hilarious.

Three facts about Mike:
- Mike was born and raised in Flagstaff, a sister colony to Phoenix and a common rest stop for nomads. Their strong relationship with the nearby reservations aided in their security.
- He lost his mother to illness and his father to bandits. His father had saved countless lives and was seen as a hero.
- He’s absolutely started seeing Jimena… And it looks like they’re getting serious.
My thoughts on Mike:
Mike is more laid back than say Wesley or Jeremy, but he’s far more serious compared to Bruno, Hunter, and Alex. Having Ethan as your mentor for more than a year or two actually pays off in that regard.
Mike learned to make armor from a young age, combining layers of polyethylene plates and woven fabric to create lightweight gear for close combat. He and his father were devastated following the loss of his mother, so they dedicated their time to protecting their neighbors. Their contributions saved countless lives, and his father’s untimely death at the hands of bandits was almost too much for the young man to take. He grew careless during his scouting runs, more reckless, with one such mission resulting in the death of a squad mate and his own close call. He was found by Ethan and recruited immediately after.
Mike had a difficult time adjusting to his new life as an angel, primarily because he felt he was not deserving of a second chance. Ethan took him under his wing, urging the youth to focus on protecting his new family instead of letting the deaths of his former one weigh on his conscience. He eventually came around, and occasionally visits the Flagstaff colony to trade supplies and gather news about local affairs and bandit sightings.
Mike grew close to Albert and James–and, much to the dismay of the psychic, Albert’s influence did little to keep Mike from joining James in his teasing. Unlike James, Mike’s jests were not out of malice, but as a way to fit into his new group. At one point, Albert took him aside and asked them to lay off Jeremy, resulting in the isolated state we see him in at the start of Aquarius.
Mike continues making armor for his colleagues, and even making extra to trade to colonists for essential supplies. This had made him the court’s leading negotiator, both in bartering goods and in dire straits. His improvisation skills are top tier, as he can adapt to almost any situation.
If there’s ever only one minor love pairing I’m excited to include, it’s Mike and Mena. She’s fun and full of positive vibes, while he’s witty and loyal. They’re both daring and family-oriented, since they lost their respective relatives in different ways, and each welcomes the other’s friends with open arms. They may or may not be pulled into some hijinks by their younger peers in Taurus. Oh, and they will definitely have a huge family. We’re talking five kids. I already have their names picked out.
For those of you who don’t know, Mike is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
