Birthday bios are back, baby!
To kick us off, let’s dig into the backstory of one of my oldest characters in the series: Gavin Moore!
Basic Info:
Age in Aquarius: 18
Height: 5’9 | Weight: 160 lbs.
Hair: medium-length, messy, wavy, carob brown | Eyes: hazel with tiger orange
Human Race: Half-Choctaw, half-Irish-American | Species: demon
Hailing Planet: Semes (the Sun)
Ability: pyrokinesis, limited calokinesis & photokinesis
Rank: none
Specialties: control over his flames, taking the enemy by surprise, listening to his peers
Best friend: Kent Dimaculangan, Karia Peters
Mentor: Kent Dimaculangan
Soul mate: to be revealed in a later book 😉
Three facts about Gavin:
- Gavin’s not the only fire-wielding member of the Semes Tribe; Tripp, Gabby, and Karia all generate their own flames and demonstrate some level of control over them, while Kent is a full-blown pyrokinetic. Each member’s flames are a different color–Gavin’s are red-orange!
- Tallulah, Gavin & Gabby’s mother, went missing when they were very young. He hasn’t been able to prove it, but Gavin believes his father is involved.
- As his mentor and best friend, Kent upholds a friendly level of competitiveness with Gavin. Not a day goes by when those two aren’t sparring or taking part in some bizarre contest.
My thoughts on Gavin:
Gavin Moore is by no means a perfect person; he’s a hot-headed teenager with daddy issues who spent the better part of his life without proper maternal influence. His mother, Tallulah Ordell, has been missing since he and Gabby were little, and the only person who has any idea as to her whereabouts is his father, Nathan Moore–however, he hasn’t divulged any information on this topic to his two children.
Though he’s yet to admit it to anyone besides Karia, Gabby has sort of taken that role in his life, in spite of the fact that he’s the older sibling. In turn, he’s been overwhelmingly supportive of her journey as a transgender youth–and when a hormonal, emotionally immature teenager expresses their support of someone they care about, that support can lead to an overprotective and (at times) overbearing nature. That’s not to say that he tries to shelter Gabby; on the contrary, he encourages her to speak her mind and follow her intuition. More often than not, it’s Gabby who’s taking care of Gavin, though the two care and look after one another diligently.
There was a time (during the early Lizzie’s Diary era) when Gavin had a crush on Karia–and, if you’ve read the series, you’ll notice that she also had a crush on him before Monty’s coronation. After seeing her in a healthy, loving relationship with a good man, his feelings faded from romantic to platonic. This hasn’t changed in the main book series; Gavin still sees her as just a friend, and low-key roots for Karia to reconnect with and forgive Monty. As a stubborn teenager, this idea that the former lovers will go back to the way things were is not only wishful thinking, but distracting him from what is right in front of him: a dear friend who sees him as something more.
He and Koji had a couple of instances in the past where they didn’t see eye to eye (again, you’ll understand if you’ve read the LD blog series), but the two settled their differences following Gavin’s recruitment to the tribe. The two of them have a lot in common: they both have emotionally mature and responsible siblings, and they have both fallen for close friends who were in relationships with other people. In Gavin’s case, however, he and Monty were never close, nor do they really become close between this point in LD and where the main book series picks up. That being said, they respect one another as fellow spirits, defenders of Savannah, and the two main men in Karia’s life.
We’re going to watch this young man mature in the books to come–particularly in a trilogy set to follow the events of Saturn Rising.
For those of you who don’t know, Gavin is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
