Three facts about Shade:
- Shade isn’t the first member of his family to join the Poseideans; Matron Nail is his older cousin. She practically raised him.
- Unlike Rush, Shade never pushed or pressured Dream into a relationship. The two remained platonic friends until they were both ready to take the next step.
- When he was little, Shade lost his mother to a bandit ambush during a scouting run. The Night Eagle family are well known scouts and lookouts.
My thoughts on Shade:
Shade has always appeared as a brooding figure in my mind. He’s a very serious person, and takes a long time to open up to new people. The school for the Niitsitapi children is the same one that admits youth from all of the colonies within Poseidean territory, so while most of Wave Three technically attended the same institution around the same time, many of them were still scattered into various cliques. Shade was always a loner, with his first friends outside of his family being Attack and Thunder, both of which were introduced to the recluse by Nail. They were the patient yet social older brother figures he needed to encourage him to meet new people–Thunder went above and beyond, introducing Shade to his twin and their friends around the younger boy’s age. So it was through Thunder that Shade met Rush, through Rush that he met Risk, and through Risk that he met the rest of their friend group–including Dream.
Shade and Dream’s relationship is my favorite among all the members of Wave Three. Neither of them is particularly goofy or silly, but they have the best comedic timing with those closest to them, especially each other. They were close even before Dream discovered her telepathy, and they’ve only grown closer over time. Now that they’re soul mates, the two have entered a relationship and are taking things slow–for themselves as much as for Rush, who is dear to both of them and was somewhat hurt by their bond–but not for the reasons you think. Remember, Shade and Dream’s bond wasn’t realized until after Scorch was recognized as their true chief–which means that Rush has not only recalled his first life, but his memories of some of their mission attempts. With these memories come critical knowledge… Like the identity of his soul mate.
For those of you who don’t know, Shade is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
