Happy Birthday Risk!

This is sort of a big deal for me. Not only is Risk one of the first characters I ever created, she’s also from an era of characters that were modelled after friends and classmates. While the person she represents is no longer someone I would consider close, we are still acquaintances, and I hope she continues to live life to the fullest.

Another reason this is a big turning point for me is because Risk didn’t make an appearance in Aquarius, and there’s a good chance she won’t make one until the third book–but she is an important part of Rush’s life, and a major player in both his and Punish’s character arcs. I’m excited to write about Risk and the rest of the Havet Tribe as they’re an important fixture in the next two books–in other words, the next four weeks should fuel my creativity and inspire me to complete Taurus!

Side note: for the Poseideans, there will be a few changes to the birthday bio format. Their real names will be included under Basic Info, their age will be referred to as “Age in Taurus” (even if they don’t actually make their first appearance in Taurus, like Risk), and the “Mentor” distinction will return since it wasn’t used for the Caelians.

Basic Info:

Real name: Kendra Blue Eyes
Age in Taurus: 24
Height: 5’7 | Weight: 135 lbs.
Hair: short ashy brown bob | Eyes: stone/greyish-blue
Human Race: 3/4 Niitsitapi, 1/4 French-Canadian
Species: Demon
Hailing Planet: Havet
Ability: enhanced expectoration; “lava spit”
Rank: none
Specialties: go-getter, takes charge, fearless, not easily intimidated, hand-to-hand combat, blunt weapons, skeptical, attentive
Roommate: Sparkle
Best friends: Rave, Sparkle
Mentors: Attack & Nail
Soul mate: To be revealed in a future book 😉

Three facts about Risk:

  1. Risk can control her ability really well, to the point where she has to focus in order to actually activate her lava spit. She let’s the male demons believe otherwise for obvious reasons.
  2. She was always the more athletic of her siblings, and compared to the rest of the tribe? She’s an undefeated champion. Don’t challenge her to a sport unless you’re prepared to cry.
  3. Since Risk and Punish have been dating since his recruitment, she does not suspect him in Scorch’s murder. She does, however, find him suspicious for other reasons.

My thoughts on Risk:

While I did mention before that Risk was one of the first characters I created, and an important facet in the developments of two other characters, I never expected to make her a central figure in the overarching story. It’s more like she’s a central figure in the Poseidean story, someone who will influence great change in the relationship between the Poseideans and the Plutonians.

Risk is… Well, not necessarily as reckless as she was in her youth. She’s far less impulsive; rather, even her most bold or risky decisions were the subject of fierce internal debate. She’s calculating, considering every possible course of action before settling on the one that she feels is the best. She pays close attention to her surroundings at all times, and is rarely taken by surprise. One can find Risk with multiple weapons on her person, including two knives, two guns, and a wooden bat. (She saw that last weapon in a superhero comic once and thought it looked cool.)

So far, Risk’s soul mate has only been mentioned by name once in Aquarius, and they probably won’t appear or be mentioned again in the Saturn Rising trilogy. The story doesn’t end with Saturn Rising, though–there’s at least three other series planned to follow, and that spirit plays a minor role in all of them. We’ll get more of Risk before then, so worry not.

For those of you who don’t know, Risk is a supporting character in my trilogy Saturn Rising, which is the first installment of The Chronicles of Life & Death. The first book, Aquarius, is available now on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. You can even read it all for free with Kindle Unlimited! Learn more here.
