We have a double birthday today–but first, let’s talk about Caleb Ewing, the angel with the kindest heart in the Zeroua Court.

Three facts about Caleb:

1. Caleb was born with Swyer syndrome, so their puberty was not like most people’s. They’re the shortest member of the Zeroua Court.
2. They did not have a name prior to their recruitment. Julian and Wells fought over names before Alice suggested Caleb.
3. They enjoy reading anything they can get their hands on and listening as Aria and Eric play music. They can be found sitting by the fireplace on most evenings.

My thoughts on Caleb:

Caleb is a soft-spoken sweetie pie. They were left at an orphanage in Teton Village, Wyoming when they were very young. Because of their condition, they did not develop the secondary sex characteristics typical of a cis-female during puberty. They’ve identified as both male and female since they were little, and it wasn’t until after they were found by Julian, Scarlett, and Wellington that they felt comfortable identifying as bigender. Alice decided on their name since Wells and Julian could not settle on one.

The court has learned that Caleb dresses according to the gender identity that they’re most aligned with; on days when they’re feeling more feminine, Julian calls them Caley. They prefer gender neutral pronouns since their identity flips so often.

They enjoy helping to care for the livestock and reading books. Scarlett brings back several books for them while on supply runs and scouting missions. Other than that, they enjoy the camaraderie of game night and beating Aidan and Julian at videogames.
