Three facts about Nail:
- Nail is part of the second wave of Poseideans; these demons were recruited early in order to better prepare them to protect their territory. Wave Two is considered the most experienced in combat.
- Attack tells everyone that he felt his bond with Nail when they were kids, a fact that baffles her. She thought he was terrified of “the girl with claws.”
- Nail will be three months pregnant with her second child at the start of Taurus. She’s stuck at home and dying for a mission.
My thoughts on Nail:
When I was first coming up with the backgrounds for Rush and the tribe, it became clear to me that the teens needed someone to lean on. The Iuppiter Court has the Council of Elders for their youth; the Ninurta Court has older members who take new recruits under their wing. The Zulwini Tribe didn’t exist until Sabryna ran away from home at nineteen, and all of her members are her age or older. The Zeroua Court was created in a blend similar to the Caelians, but Alice was a preteen and recruited anyone with potential without the guidance of an experienced spirit for a while (we’ll touch on the Cythereans further down the road when their birthdays come around–by then Taurus should be mostly done, so their bios will be topical). I decided the Poseideans needed a strong, numerous tribe, and a system all their own. Since they cover so much territory, it makes sense that there should be elder members who Rush and Scorch looked up to–and one of those is Nail, the matron of the Havet Tribe when Wave Three was recruited.
Since Nail and other members of Wave Two were all awakened around ten years old, those with abilities have had years to hone them. This also means that, for a power as hazardous as nail manipulation and venom secretion, little Izzy had a few mishaps in her early years. She learned self-control sooner than most of her peers, and even used her venom to create antidotes for the colonists. She says it’s because the wildlife surrounding them is unpredictable, but Attack knows it’s because she’s scared she’ll slip and hurt someone again.
As their superior and the soul mate of their chief, Nail became a mother figure to members of Wave Three. This was already the case with Shade, her younger cousin whose mother was killed on a scouting run. She’s abrasive and boasts “tough love,” but in reality she’s the first to notice when something is off with her “children”–AKA, her actual son and the Wave Three demons. When news of Scorch’s death reached them, she had to pick her mortified soul mate off the floor and carry the tribe without any time to dry her own tears. The late chief was like a younger brother to them, and their son, Gerard, still asks where “Uncle Kenny” is. He’s three and a half 😭
